REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo

New Delhi: Smartphone shipments fell 6% on-year in the third quarter ended September 2022, dragged by a lackluster low end segment, according to a report by Canalys.

The third quarter saw smartphone shipments reaching 44.3 million units, which while is around 23% higher sequentially over the previous quarter, has declined on-year due to a strong base in Q3 2021.

Xiaomi held on to its top spot with 9.2 million units on account of traction from the monsoon season sales in July. Samsung came second in Q3 with 8.1 million shipments on account of strong momentum in the mid and high-end category.

Vivo and
Oppo jumped to the third and fourth place shipping 7.3 million and 7.1 million units respectively, while realme dropped to fifth, shipping 6.2 million units.

5G smartphone shipments have supported the overall growth in average selling price and sales revenue, even as the entry level device contribution declined this year.

“The good news is, as the festival season began, in the last few weeks of the quarter, consumer demand improved. Hit by inflation, entry-level device contribution declined this year, while the mid-to-high segment performed relatively well thanks to aggressive promotions. OPPO’s
OnePlus and vivo’s iQOO were the two brands driving mid-range growth in the e-commerce channel during this period. Ultra-premium category smartphones, especially older generation flagships, also experienced strong demand momentum amid price cuts. Samsung offered deep discounts on its older generation Galaxy Z Fold3 and latest Galaxy S22 series in online and offline channels. Similarly, demand for the aggressively discounted iPhone 13 outstripped the latest iPhone 14, whose value proposition is very similar to the former," said Canalys Analyst Sanyam Chaurasia.
