\"\"NEW DELHI: Indian Railways<\/a>’ RailWire<\/a> broadband network services are expected to reach to 500,000 households by 2018, a senior RailTel<\/a> Corporation official said.

\nState-run RailTel offers communications services and has telecom network alongside Indian rail route and covers optic fibre network at more than 4,400 railway stations with 44,300 kilometres of fibre already deployed.

“Railwire network will reach to 500,000 household in next two years proving a gamut of services. Its architecture will empower the people at village level with knowledge, skill development and core competencies. This will lead to good governance,” Pradeep Kumar<\/a>, Executive Director (East) of Railtel Corporation said.
\n
\nThe Broadband Highway, in conformity with Digital India program, will involve a three-layer network – state capitals to district headquarters, sub-divisions and then to gram panchayats through BharatNet initiative, ”Kumar added.
\n
Indian Railways’ RailWire is also engaging with local cable operators focusing on pure play broadband and virtual private network (VPN<\/a>) services, content and application-driven network.
\n
\n“Our aim is to become a hub of local information and tool for rendering communication, infotainment, education, health and community services to the masses,” he said.
\n
\nIn Eastern zone alone, RailTel seeks to cover 36,000 gram panchayats with high-speed broadband services for services such as online passport application, telemedicine, examination results and netsurfing for students with a minimum 2 Mbps speed.

\nKumar said that RailTel’s pilot programs at Panisagar and Girania in Tripura have brought a lot of enthusiasm.

\nRailTel is currently working on transformational agenda with various strategic and ambitious initiatives such as national knowledge network, rural broadband alternative network for national security and Intelligent Network Infrastructure for smart cities’ communication needs.
