NEW DELHI: State-run RailTel said that it will continue to provide free WiFi service at over 5600 railway stations across the country including the 415 stations that were powered by Google's infrastructure.

The PSU has already roped in a number of partners for providing free Wi-Fi at over 5600 stations across the country.

In a statement to ET, a RailTel spokesperson said that the PSU entered into a 5 years contract with Google for setting up Wi-Fi at 415 stations only and the contract is going to expire soon.

"We sincerely value the support we received from Google in this journey," the spokesperson added.

Earlier today,
internet major Google informed that it will discontinue its Station WiFi program in India this year, saying that getting online has become much simpler and cheaper in India and mobile data plans have become more affordable.

Caesar Sengupta, VP - Payments and Next Billion Users, Google, in a blog, said that the challenge of varying technical requirements and infrastructure among its partners across countries has also made it difficult for Station to scale and be sustainable, especially for its partners.

RailTel said that it started providing free Wi-Fi at Railway stations and Google was our technology partner for the 415 A1, A, C category stations only. Under this partnership, Google provided the RAN and technology support and RailTel provided the physical Infrastructure and Internet bandwidth (
ISP).

"But going forward, apart from these 415 stations, we have also provided free wi-fi in 5190+ B, C, D stations as well," the spokesperson added.
