Realme C2 is the second device in the company’s ‘C’ range of devices — aimed at consumers looking for entry-level smartphones. Compared to its predecessor, the C2 has the usual upgrades: new processor, improved camera and the latest version of Android.

We received the Diamond Blue colour variant and instantly loved the look of the phone. It has a diamond pattern finish which changes depending on the light. Even though it’s a plastic body, the device feels well-built and was able to handle couple of drops without any scratches or dents. Up front is a 6.1-inch IPS display protected by Gorilla Glass 3. We liked the brightness levels because it was easy to view even in direct sunlight. The screen also impressed us with good viewing angles and punchy colours. A screen guard is flawlessly pre-applied — always a welcome addition.
Specifications include a Mediatek Helio P22 octa core processor combined with 2/3GB RAM and a base storage of 32GB. It’s good to see that Realme chose the more powerful P22 processor instead of the entry-level A22. However, the phone’s performance doesn’t match up because of the heavily customized user interface. As soon you have more than 7 apps in the background, the phone becomes sluggish. Apps start taking longer to load and interface animations become jerky. At this point, even scrolling through a Facebook/ Twitter timeline will be choppy. It would have fared much better with stock Android. Battery life is the saving grace here as we always ended the day with 20-25% battery to spare.
The C2’s rear camera performance is the real surprise. You get a 13MP f2.2 with phase detect autofocus and a 2MP f2.4 depth sensor dual camera setup — both sensors have large pixels. The camera delivers photos with rich colours and excellent details in daylight: entry-level phones usually don’t have this kind of camera. Even the portrait mode works great — there was impressive edge detection with a pleasing amount of bokeh. On the other hand, the front camera is subpar. We noticed soft details in photos and often the camera tends to overexpose the background while taking a selfie.

For security, the phone has face unlock which works well. It includes the option to enable advanced security so that closed eyes will fail face detection. However, the lack of a fingerprint scanner is a letdown. If you like to watch a lot of streaming video, note that it doesn’t have support for Widevine L1 which means it can’t stream DRM protected video (Netflix, Hotstar, Prime etc) in HD quality.
Overall, the Realme C2 aims to win you over with a large screen and big battery at an aggressive price. While for the base variant (2GB), there is no competition in the price segment, the 3GB RAM variant has competition from the Redmi 7 (same price). The Redmi 7 offers much better performance with a Snapdragon 632, glass body and a rear fingerprint scanner.
