Mukesh Ambani-led Jio claimed that it is the only telco in India to have the capability and network footprint for a nationwide launch of NB-IoT services. It had launched a pilot in Mumbai in 2018 and expects to launch commercial services in the coming months.
“Jio has a unique advantage again being only (4G) LTE and all-IP network…we have the capability compared to any other operator to launch nationwide NB-IoT in India without having any incremental spectrum leveraging guard bands,” Jio president Mathew Oommen told ET.
Airtel, however, countered the claim, saying that the company's pan-India 4G network is also ready to support the technology, along with LTE-M.
"We have the capability to serve this segment and the market opportunity will depend on how the ecosystem develops and matures. In addition, we can offer IoT and M2M services on our networks," a company spokesperson said. “We have been offering these services for years now with millions of connected devices on our network”.
Market leader Vodafone Idea Ltd. (VIL) is also preparing to launch commercial NB-IoT services in India, having rolled out commercial proofs of concept for the services in Kochi, Jaipur, Bengaluru and Chennai. Nick Gliddon, chief enterprise business officer recently told ET that VIL will take its NB-IoT across India in the next 12 months.
While Jio runs a 4G-only network, Airtel and Vodafone Idea, which also offer legacy 2G and 3G services, are rapidly expanding their 4G coverage to match the new entrant.
NB-IoT is a new technology standard, designed to broaden the future of IoT connectivity, providing significantly improved and deeper network coverage for communication between machines while lowering power consumption by devices.
Rohan Dhamija, partner and head of India and Middle East at Analysys Mason said that the NB-IoT launch reflects Jio’s push into enterprise services, post its success in the consumer space.
“Though incumbents have been looking at IoT for a while, we expect Jio to go-to-market with a very strong offering, on the back of its technology expertise and market understanding,” he said.
Jio’s Oommen said that NB-IoT is currently evolving and the big use cases will revolve around the smart city concept.
“The biggest use cases smart city uses, whether it is waste management, ag-tech, smart meters or smart energy - all these are very critical to us because these can bring in the energy efficiency to India,” he said.
VIL also said that smart cities will drive growth, along with verticals like smart meters, automotive tracking and utilities.
Oommen said that 5G’s ecosystem for the Internet of Things (IoT) will be heavily dependent on NB-IoT's success in India. “...the evolution of NB-IoT and launch of NBIoT beyond enhance mobile broadband is a critical component to 5G's evolution and India's need to support everything connected,” he said.
India's IoT market size is expected to increase to $9 billion by 2020 from $1.3 billion in 2016, according to consultancy firm Deloitte.
