""KOLKATA: Reliance Jio Infocomm’s entry is set to partly affect the earnings of India’s largest three telcos —Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular — in the July-September quarter, putting pressure on their revenue growth, realisation from pricier data services, average revenue per user (ARPU) and minutes of usage.

Jio’s started its services on September 5 with an introductory free voice and data offers, and
industry experts and analysts said the major impact of its entry would be felt more in the October-December period.

While the “real impact” would be visible only in the third and the fourth quarters of this financial year, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea should brace for “early warning signals” in the September quarter itself, said former
Bharti Airtel CEO Sanjay Kapoor.

He added the top three incumbent operators would report some reduction in voice and data growth rates in July-September quarter, which is typically the weakest for telcos due to monsoon, when users make fewer calls, with Jio’s launch adding to their woes.

Goldman Sachs estimates Bharti and Idea to report an average 25 per cent on-year data revenue growth in the September quarter, a far cry from the 60 per cent increase a year earlier. The US brokerage expects data realisations to fall 17-18 per cent on-year, and about 8 per cent sequentially for the two companies – both sharper declines than in April-June quarter – after they tried to pre-empt Jio by offering more data at the same rates.

Analysts said Vodafone would also face similar pressures, although they didn’t have estimates since the company is unlisted in India. Market leader Airtel, No. 2 Vodafone India and third-ranked Idea didn’t respond to emailed queries for comment.

Voice services, which still make up about 80 per cent of the revenue of incumbent companies, may be hurt as Jio attracts customers from rivals and more calls from its network go through to subscribers of other operators, overcoming the initial failures due to interconnection challenges.

Jio said it had 16 million users after the first month of operations, most of whom were, already, subscribers of existing telcos, especially the smaller ones.

After Jio’s inaugural offers of free data and voice end in December, calls will remain free for its subscribers. “Even if people are using it as the second SIM initially, we are seeing some impact on voice usage, besides of course, on data,” said an industry insider asking not to be identified.

Kotak Institutional Equities backed the view, saying data and voice minutes used by Jio subscribers would get split between their existing operators and the newcomer. It expects Idea to be more susceptible to Jio’s free voice service offer as “its share of floating minutes” is greater than Airtel’s.

Goldman Sachs expects Bharti and Idea to report 5.4 per cent and 2.5 per cent sequential dips in monthly minutes of usage per subscriber, respectively, in the September quarter.

“This will only get more pronounced in the ongoing quarter,” the industry insider said. C

redit Suisse expects Bharti and Idea to report 2.8 per cent and 1.7 per cent sequential declines in their ARPUs – a key operational parameter – from Rs 196 and Rs 181, respectively, as prices come under pressure.
