""KOLKATA: Reliance Jio Infocomm’s free voice and data offer to some 1.8 million users in its ongoing 4G trial phase may hamper the data growth of incumbent carriers Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular over the next three to four months, analysts said.

Most customers with Jio’s
4G SIM use it as an internet-sharing device, turning it into a Wi-Fi hotspot. This typically leads to “at least 2-to-3 mobile phones per home latching on and such consumers normally use less data on their regular incumbent carrier’s SIM as the Jio data is currently free,” an analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a note to clients seen by ET.

According to the US brokerage, recent discussions with
industry participants suggested that "data growth of existing incumbent carriers is getting impacted," which is why it sees downside risks to Bharti and Idea’s data estimates for the next three-four months. Downside risks, in this context, would mean "stiffer-than-expected competition from Jio," it said. Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular did not reply to ET’s queries as of press time.

Bank of America said the impact of Jio's free offer would be felt only in the near term and ruled out much material impact after Jio starts commercial services as it is yet to reach a substantial mass. “It remains to be seen how many customers stick to Jio post the free-offer expiry and how much the usage drops,” the US brokerage said.

BNP Paribas expects "Jio’s free voice and data promotion to put pressure on near-term volume growth" of incumbent carriers in the seasonally weak second quarter. The top three incumbents have been trying various data-pricing strategies to retain higher revenue paying customers and have already slashed effective rates. As the voice business plateaus, India's telcos have been looking at pricier data services to sustain growth and are expanding their 3G and 4G presence.

Bharti Airtel and No. 3 carrier Idea reported 2.5 per cent and 8.1 per cent sequential dips in their respective data realisations in the April-June quarter amid competitive pressures and poor penetration at the low and medium ends of the market. Vodafone said its data revenue growth in the quarter had slowed down sharply. Analysts said data realisations of incumbent carriers could decline by as much as 25 per cent over the next one year.

According to
Credit Suisse, the key reasons for stagnant data penetration are the lack of low-ticket monthly plans and the relatively high tariffs. “Low ARPU (average revenue per user) plans obviously have a hig pressuher addressable market and the (incumbent) networks may not be ready to handle such an explosion in volumes, which is perhaps why operators have avoided such plans," said the Swiss brokerage.

This is more so because the chances of monthly data allowance in smaller packs getting fully consumed is higher than in the case of larger packs, said an analyst at
Credit Suisse. The brokerage is sceptical about Airtel's latest 1GB data offer, which requires prepaid users to shell out Rs 1,498 upfront to enjoy discounts on recharges of every GB for a year.

Bank of America said the impact of Jio's free offer would be felt only in the near term and ruled out much material impact after Jio starts commercial services.
["industry","Bank of America","Credit Suisse","ARPU","4G","Vodafone India","Reliance Jio
telecomnews/reliance-jios-free-preview-offer-may-hit-data-growth-of-incumbents-like-airtel-voda-idea"}}" data-authors="[" kalyan parbat"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-08-31" data-index="article_1">

Bharti Airtel
