“RJio’s wireless market share for August 2018 increased to 20.5%. Meanwhile, RJio’s subscriber base grew 5.4% month-on-month,” Delhi-based rating agency in a statement said.
Aditya Birla-owned Idea Cellular’s subscriber base fell 1.6% during the month – a highest among private sector telcos while state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited<\/a>’s (BSNL) consumer base shrank 0.6% during the month.
However, Vodafone India Limited (Vodafone) and Idea now together hold 37.9% of the subscriber market share, according to Ind-Ra.
The agency attributed Mathew Oommen-driven telco’s growth to large data allowances at low prices, aggressively priced tariff plans, and tie-ups with over the top (OTT) players.
In August 2018, 9.8 million wireless subscribers were added in the telecom sector.
“The monthly addition of 12.2 million subscribers is the highest achieved by RJio in the last 12 months,” the agency added.
The top three telcos— Vodafone-Idea, Bharti Airtel<\/a> and Jio collectively held 88% share in the subscriber market in August 2018, after market consolidation.
The new study also pointed out that during August 2017 to August 2018, RJio added the highest number of Visitor Location Register (VLR) subscribers, totaling 88.0 million while Bharti Airtel added 67.0 million.

The VLR subscriber base of Vodafone-Idea increased by 16 million with 12.0 million added by Vodafone alone.
Ind-Ra believes that Jio’s aggressive marketing could lead to an expansion in the broadband market, somewhat similar to the one that took place in the wireless mobile data market.
RJio’s target to reach 50 million households over the next three to four years looks achievable through the acquired subscribers of multiple-system operators.
