"The government vertical has picked pace in the last one year due to new WiFi deployments. It has made a change to our business mixture and is contributing towards it significantly. India as a whole continues to grow year-on-year, and is one of the fastest growing markets for the company," Sudarshan Boosupalli, Country Head India and SAARC, Ruckus Networks, told ET.
He added that the overall business continues to grow on the back of the telecom and enterprise business.
Till last year, Ruckus' telecom service provider business was contributing around 30-40% towards overall revenue, while government segment accounted for 20%.
In addition to Smart Cities, Ruckus is also participating in the BharatNet project through its partners. It also provided its products and solutions for Google's Station WiFi project to cover 400 railway stations and Facebook' Express WiFi project.
Ruckus Wireless was last year acquired by Arris International from Brocade Communication Systems in a deal worth $800 million. The company is now planning to grow its research and development (R&D) team in India.
"In the coming 12 months, we will be growing our R&D team in India by hiring between 40-50 engineers in software development. The areas of hiring include all major areas of development like Wireless AP software and Smart Cell Insight Analytics software among others," Pramod Badjate, SVP – Global Engineering, Ruckus Networks, said.
The company's Bangalore R&D center has close to 350 employees, of which 65% are engineers and 35% are support staff. They are involved in building new products and new features across the range of products.
The acquisition by Arris now allows Ruckus to focus more on enterprises with switching business. Boosupalli said that the switching business globally and in India has seen strong growth in the recent quarters. He added that the managed services business for enterprises is seeing good traction in the market.
Asked if Ruckus Networks is considering local production of its hardware, Boosupalli said that the senior management is open, but there hasn't been any decision yet.
