""NEW DELHI: US-based advisory firm Gartner Tuesday said that there was a strong growth of 4G smartphones in the mid
-segment of emerging economies while Korean vendor
Samsung’s smartphone sales grew 7.5%, on year, after three consecutive quarterly drops.

“Global sales of smartphones totaled 366.2 million units in the second quarter of 2017, a 6.7% increase over the second quarter of 2016. Samsung's smartphone sales grew 7.5 percent, year over year,” Gartner in a statement said.

The finding revealed that Samsung cornered a worldwide market share of 22.5%, followed by Cupertino-based
Apple (12.1%) and Chinese Huawei (9.8%).

With smartphone giant Apple, all set to debut the iPhone 8 in September while rival Huawei too has plans to launch Mate 10 later this year, and are likely to make competition more intense.

Greater China and Asia Pacific remained top two regions constituting 27.7% and 21.4% of the overall global smartphone sales share in Q2, 2017.

"Although demand for utility smartphones remains strong, there is growing demand in emerging markets for 4G smartphones. This is translating into higher demand for midpriced ($150 to $200) smartphones,"
Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner said.

Samsung, according to Gartner, had been hit hard by problems with the
Galaxy Note 7, but the Galaxy S8 and S8+ were bringing back high demand for smartphones.

"Despite growing competition from Chinese brands such as Huawei,
Oppo and Vivo, we expect Samsung to register a growth in 2017," Gupta added.

The study also points out that despite clearing the distribution channel of iPhone inventory amounting to 3.3 million units during the second quarter, Apple's sales were flat (down 0.2%), on year.

"Apple's sales in emerging markets are expected to grow as older-generation iPhones continue to attract buyers,” he said, adding that the new iOS 11, which will include augmented reality, machine learning, an improved Siri and a new display design, will likely fuel strong iPhone sales in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Gupta, however, said that Huawei's P10 suffered from a flash memory shortage, and smaller, traditional brands, such as HTC, LG and Sony, were stuck between aggressive Chinese brands and the dominating market shares of Samsung and Apple in the premium smartphone segment.

Chinese brands of
BBK Electronics family— Vivo and Oppo— achieved the best performances in the second quarter of 2017, with on year sales surge of 70.8% and 44.1% respectively.

Vivo, according to Gupta maintained second place in China and grew its sales internationally and similarly, Oppo secured its leading position in China by offering dual rear-facing and front-facing cameras.

The firm believes that the sales of all types of smartphones grew in Q2, 2017, when compared with Q2, 2016, adding that there was a concern about rising component costs, and limited supply, due to the reduced availability of critical components.

The finding revealed that Samsung cornered a worldwide market share of 22.5%, followed by Cupertino-based Apple (12.1%) and Chinese Huawei (9.8%).
["Samsung","Galaxy Note 7","BBK Electronics","Apple","Vivo","S8","Oppo","S8+","Anshul Gupta","Huawei","Gartner","4G","smartphone","Devices
telecomnews/s8-s8-helps-samsung-shrug-off-galaxy-note-7-fiasco-effects"}}" data-authors="[" muntazir abbas"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2017-08-22" data-index="article_1">
