NEW DELHI: Samsung Electronics said it clocked about 40% market share by value in the smartphone market in May and aims to increase this by expanding its presence in the affordable segment.

The leading handset maker in the Indian market launched two smartphones - Galaxy J5 priced at 11,999 and Galaxy J7 priced at 14,999 - on Thursday and said its smartphone share had been growing by double digits month on month, at par with the industry.

"In smartphones, we have exited May with about 40% value market share, growing month-on-month, based on sales to end consumers. The numbers by volume are similar," said Asim Warsi, vice president of marketing for IT and mobiles at Samsung India, quoting syndicated data. "Overall, the market is growing. Within that, Samsung not only maintains leadership but we have consolidated and strengthened our leadership position."

According to GfK, Samsung's market share was 38% by value and 33.6% by volume for the January-May period.

Samsung's smartphone market share fell to 21.5% in the quarter to June from 28% in the previous quarter, according to analytics and import data tracking firm Cybex Exim Solutions, due to stiff competition from local and Chinese companies with aggressive pricing strategies. Warsi countered the findings.

He said the company wanted to increase its presence and market share with more models in the affordable segment, an area where it has a 33.9% share by volume and 35.2% share by value, with about half a dozen models. In India, the affordable segment typically falls in the 8,000 to 15,000 price band and is where most volume sales take place.

The segment has seen extremely high competition with most brands - Indian, Chinese and MNC - launching smartphones with high specifications, such as 4G LTE, and attractive pricing.

The South Korean smartphone maker has taken these factors into consideration in its two-pronged strategy and launched the J5 and J7 exclusively on ecommerce site Flipkart. The devices will carry freebies worth almost 4,000, including a data offer from Airtel, unlimited downloads worth 594 through the Wynk Music app for six months and game credits worth 3,200 for top titles. Pre-booking of the devices is open from July 16 to July 22.

The 4G-enabled handset is powered by a 2600 mAh battery.

The J7 has similar specifications except for a 5.5-inch screen, 16 GB of inbuilt storage, a 3000 mAh battery and a 1.5 GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 processor.

Warsi added that Samsung would look at introducing more LTE-enabled smartphones through the year that could be on its self-built Exynos processor.

Samsung Electronics said it clocked about 40% market share by value in the smartphone market in May and aims to increase this by expanding its presence in the affordable segment.
["Devices","Samsung","Smartphone","product launches","4G","GfK
devices/samsung-india-claims-40-value-share-in-smartphones"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="Devices" data-category_id="12" data-date="2015-07-16" data-index="article_1">
