“In IoT, we're talking about millions of devices, we're not talking about a few devices. We need to create devices in India and that means the biggest issue is making sure that the devices will work in the network, that's where inter-operability becomes very crucial,” Srinivasan Sundararajan, network business division head, Samsung India, told ET during a recent interview.

He said that India requires devices at local price points even though the use cases are international from markets such as South Korea or North America.

Samsung, which is the sole supplier of 4G LTE network gear to Reliance Jio, recently extended its partnership with the new telco to roll out India's first narrowband Internet of Things (IoT) network, which is currently live in Mumbai, India.

Sundararajan said that the company’s Bengaluru research and development (R&D) centre is helping third-party device makers to test and certify their products, which can be used by the Mukesh Ambani-led telco for various IoT services.

Jio and Samsung are working with third party developers and chipset vendors to define low-cost devices. “We are looking at a volume game,” Tareq Amin, senior vice-president (technology) at Reliance Jio, had previously told ET.

The new entrant is currently targeting transportation and logistics sectors primarily with its IoT services, and will also tap environment and agriculture sectors industries. “We will be targeting industries case by case…What we are waiting for is to continue to get the maturity of the IoT platform and device ecosystem. The network is ready today,” Amin had said.

Samsung’s Sundararajan said that the fifth-generation, or 5G technology, will benefit the Prime Minister’s Smart City project, besides enabling use cases such as wireless fibre and high-speed services for enterprises.

“I do believe that India will drive in 5G much earlier than the previous technologies,” he said, adding that device ecosystem needs to develop as well with India prices for the technology to pick up alongside developed markets.

The executive said that its partner Jio is already prepared for the 5G technology from a network’s perspective. “We are ensuring that Jio is always at the forefront of any technology that is coming into the marketplace.”
