NEW DELHI: Samsung expects India’s tablet market to revive this year with consumer segment sales picking up following the availability of cheap data prices and content, and abundant 4G LTE coverage. Keeping the market developments in mind, the South Korean major is now planning to drive its volume market share in tablet space by launching sub-Rs 10,000 4G LTE tablet in India.

Vishal Kaul, director, Samsung India, told ET. “2018 will be an inflexion year for both the company and the industry. We now see a bright future for the tablet industry.”

Counterpoint Research though wasn’t as optimistic. It estimates tablet shipments are likely to be limited to within a million units in the third quarter, which ended December 2017, and 3.5 million units for the calendar year 2017, growing 2% year-on-year. It, however, says the rate is unlikely to be sustained amid a dip in consumer demand.

India’s overall tablet market saw strong sequential growth in the third quarter of 2017, helped by one-off events such as the Gujarat government's NAMO tablet scheme for college students. IDC estimates that India shipped 1.1 million tablets in quarter, up 46% from the previous quarter and 3% on-year. CyberMedia Research (CMR), on its part, pegged third quarter tablet shipment growth at 38% on-quarter.
