NEW DELHI: Samsung is planning to exit the high volume but low value feature phone business in India gradually, with the last batch of the devices for the country set to be manufactured by contract manufacturing partner Dixon this December, people familiar with the matter said.

The Korean major is believed to be focusing its energies on higher price tiers, with one of the people saying that
Samsung will be launching smartphones mostly above Rs 15,000 going forward.

The move comes with the Korean company, among the two major multinational contributors to the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, mandated to get sops only on producing handsets worth over Rs 15,000 factory price and, as average selling prices in India rise with the Rs 10,000-20,000 price segment seeing the most traction by volume, say market experts.

“Samsung has spoken to channel partners and said they will exit the India feature phone business in the next few months or by this year's end," one of the people told ET.

Samsung didn’t respond to ET’s emailed query while
Dixon declined to comment.

Feature phone shipment in India has seen a 39% on-year decline in the first quarter of 2022, owing to a supply crunch, high inventory levels and softening of demand due to high retail inflation, according to market tracker Counterpoint Research. Within that segment, Samsung, which was the leader till some years back, has fallen down the pecking order to be at number 3 with a 12% share at March end, behind leader Itel (21%) and home-bred Lava at 20% share, according to Counterpoint Research data.

At March end, the basic phone segment contributed 1% in value and 20% in volumes to Samsung’s overall quarterly shipments, according to Counterpoint. Samsung's possible exit will leave the market open for its rivals in the feature phone segment, namely Lava, HMD Global's
Nokia and Transsion Holding's Itel sub-brand.

The Korean major has been trying to regain its leadership in the higher value smartphone segment. In that, Samsung executives have told ET that the company expects to grow in double digits in the June quarter. It had already captured pole position in March, cornering a 22% share, driven by 5G handsets above Rs 15,000, and displacing Chinese rival
Xiaomi in the process, according to Counterpoint. The company has also been the highest selling 5G smartphone brand in India for two consecutive quarters, the research firm said.

Analysts say the government's PLI scheme for local manufacturing of handsets has had a part to play in Samsung’s plans. Under the scheme, multinational brands are mandated to manufacture phones above Rs15,000 (factory price) to avail the benefits, while domestic brands can avail incentives by making cheaper phones.

As a result, Samsung had given its budget phone manufacturing business to local manufacturer Dixon, analysts said. With demand for feature phones at an all-time low, it makes sense for Samsung to stop selling its feature phones in India, and focus more on exports, experts added.

India though remains a large export hub of feature phones in the world, catering to strong demand in Latin America and Africa, registering Rs 1,496 crore worth of exports in FY21, a 621% jump from 2020, according to government data. Market trackers told ET that Samsung could still focus on exporting feature phones from India.
