NEW DELHI: The satellite industry<\/a> has urged the Department of Telecommunications<\/a> (DoT) to administratively allocate spectrum in line with global practices.
The satellite companies reasoned that satellite spectrum<\/a> auction has never happened in India. The industry is also of the opinion that a conducive policy is required for sector, comprising international best practices, to ensure growth, according to a statement from the SIA-India<\/a> on Friday.
ET in its September 17 edition has reported that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India<\/a> (TRAI) has commenced meetings with telecom companies, satellite players, and telecom department officials to seek views on satellite spectrum and the allocation methodology for these airwaves.
This is in the run-up to a consultation paper that the telecom regulator is expected to release in the next two to three months, which will discuss all spectrum allocation cases. TRAI is also expected to meet officials in the Department of Space (DoS) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) before issuing the discussion paper.
\"While India is making rapid progress in digital economy, one needs to keep in mind that satcom<\/a> plays a pivotal role. And as the Hon’ble Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar pointed out, satcom will be inherent for last mile connectivity,” said Anil Prakash, Director General - SIA-India in a statement on Friday.
