Aeva Technologies Inc, a maker of a sensing system for self-driving cars founded by two ex-Apple Inc engineers, has added two more veterans from the iPhone maker to its ranks.
James Reuther, who spent more than a decade at NASA before a stint at Apple overseeing new sensing technologies, has joined the company as its vice president of technology. Sawyer Cohen, who spent more than a decade at Apple and was the company's iPhone product design lead for almost five years, will be Aeva's senior director of product design.
Founded by former Apple engineers Soroush Salehian and Mina Rezk, Aeva makes a lidar sensor that helps cars gain a three-dimensional view of the road. The sensor can also detect how quickly distant objects are moving, which helps in distinguishing pedestrians from stationary objects.
"What drove me to Aeva is their truly unique technology which will enable autonomous systems to see the world around them with greater fidelity than ever before," Reuther said in a statement.
Aeva earlier this year said it had hired Tim Willis, another Apple veteran, as vice president of global supply chain, manufacturing and strategy. The company has disclosed partnerships with automotive suppliers such as Denso Corp and ZF Friedrichshafen AG to supply sensors for cars.
Aeva has also said it is also working to apply its sensor technology to consumer electronics but has not yet disclosed any customers in that field.
In a statement, Cohen said he plans to "work closely with our teams and partners and leverage my experience to bring high performance and the highest quality perception solutions to mass production."
