Mumbai: Zoom Video Communications' India head said he was "shocked" at the resemblance that recently launched video conferencing app JioMeet had with the Zoom app, and said there have been a "lot of discussions internally" of pursuing a legal route.

"We knew it was happening, we knew it was coming. It's fine, it is not the first time that Zoom has faced competition. Our strength has been our products and technology and our focus is on customers. What our competitors do is their strategy," Sameer Raje, India head for
Zoom Video Communications, told ET.

When asked for his reaction to the similarities of Reliance
Jio's JioMeet with the Zoom app, Raje said he was "shocked".

"What our competitors do is their strategy...In my all hands meet, I told my team, it doesn’t matter how an individual or a corporate reacts to what the competition is doing," Raje said.

On the possibility of a lawsuit against JioMeet, Raje said that there have been a "lot of discussions internally and I would not like to comment on this because it is a matter for my legal team to look into it and I will leave it for them".

The popular video calling app is also trying to expunge the misinformation that it is a Chinese make and has been in touch with the government over the last three months on how it runs its platform and does not store data outside the country.

"It is not a question of being worried, but it is a question of putting the truth out there because we believe that there is a lot of misinformation. People feel that Zoom is of Chinese origin and that we share data with the neighboring country, etc. We are an American company and we do not share data with any government," said Raje. "We have two data centers in India, people tend to forget that."

This comes on the back of the app's message on Twitter two days ago which highlighted that it is a US based firm. 'We do recognize that as we continue to introduce ourselves to the Indian market, there has been some confusion about the facts as it relates to Zoom. Zoom is a U.S. company, publicly traded on the NASDAQ, founded and headquartered in San Jose, California'.

The Indian government recently banned 59 Chinese apps including popular ones like
TikTok on grounds of threat to security.

Zoom became one of the top downloaded apps during the lockdown as India Inc started to work from home and even educational institutes logged in online. However, in April, the Ministry of Home Affairs had red flagged concerns over data safety and security around Zoom. Amidst data security concerns, Raje said the company's officials have met various segments of the government to assuage all fears .

"We met them in April, May and June, are in touch with MeitY and the Ministry of Home Affairs and have discussed relevant technical information about our data centres... We are not sharing data, we are sharing technicalities of our platform, how it operates," the India head said.

"We work with law enforcement agencies and we have been sharing details with the Government of India. If there is any issue –with children using the platform and with cyber crime going up by 600%, we work very closely with the law enforcement agencies to help bring offenders to book, " said Raje.
