Hyderabad: Aerospace startup Skyroot Aerospace<\/a> has raised $11 million in a Series A funding round led by promoters of renewable energy firm Greenko Group<\/a>, with participation of existing investors including Solar Industries<\/a> and Curefit<\/a> founder Mukesh Bansal<\/a>.

Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli, founder promoters of Greenko Group, as well as a representative of Solar Industries will now join the startup’s board of directors.

The existing investors include Solar Industries India Ltd., former WhatsApp Chief Business Officer Neeraj Arora, CureFit founder Mukesh Bansal, Worldquant Ventures, Graph Ventures, Sutton Capital, Vedanshu Investments and a few angel investors.

Prior to raising the Series-A funding, the aerospace startup had in all raised Rs 31.5 crore cumulatively in phases from the existing investors. Mukesh Bansal took the first leap of faith in Skyroot during its formative days and backed it with a $1.5 million investment through his incubator Meraki Labs.

Skyroot Aerospace intends to raise $40 million more to fund its aggressive growth plans over the next few years, said Naga Bharath Daka, co-founder and chief operating officer. On the Series-A funding, he said, it will add “more fuel to our rocket program and will support in completing development and testing of all subsystems of our first launch vehicle Vikram-1 and strengthening our world-class team.”

The aerospace startup has also “started bookings for launches starting from mid next year and are actively engaging global customers,” said Naga Bharath.

Isro has been offering great support, said Skyroot’s co-founder and chief executive Pawan Kumar Chandana, adding that they have “signed an agreement with them (Isro) and are working closely for our testing and launch requirements.”

Skyroot Aerospace, which became the first Indian private company to demonstrate the capability to build a home-grown rocket engine and successfully test-fired an upper-stage rocket engine, was founded by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, former scientists at the state-owned Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).

The aerospace startup plans to build a family of rockets and is preparing to launch the first rocket that can hurl satellites of 250-700 kilograms into lower earth orbit by end of this year.

Skyroot Aerospace has designed in-house software for launch vehicle guidance, navigation and control functions and is testing onboard its avionics modules.

“Skyroot is building the infrastructure which will help develop new opportunities for innovation in the space ecosystem and offer unique ways to improve the quality of life on earth,” said Anil and Mahesh of Greenko Group. “The next-generation technology Skyroot is building today will unlock potential for sustainability interventions, space-based research, data analytics and telecommunications,” they said, adding that their partnership will help Skyroot accelerate towards being a leading Space launch player globally.
