There was a new breed of buyers this festive season for smartphones and televisions offered at deep discounts by Amazon and Flipkart: small retailers who purchased the latest models online – in many cases, at rates lower than distributor prices, four senior industry executives said.

These retailers picked up Apple’s iPhones and Realme, Honor and One-Plus smartphones while also stocking up on Xiaomi handsets, which aren’t adequately supplied to meet offline demand. In televisions, they snapped up brands such as Xiaomi and Sanyo, which were priced much lower than similar models of other brands sold online and not yet widely available offline.

Earlier, too, small offline retailers used to buy handsets from ecommerce marketplaces, but purchases were largely of iPhones that were deeply discounted. This year, the trend is across brands and televisions.

Some retailers are even selling the models they purchased online at slightly higher rates than online prices because there is demand for them, said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of the Retailers Association of India.

Most brick-and-mortar stores, including large chains, reported 30-40% lower sales of smartphones and televisions up to 43 inches during Navratri, Durga Puja, Dussehra and Diwali due to online discounting of up to 30% along with additional offers from banks. Both Flipkart and Amazon claimed record sales of smartphones and televisions this festive season.

According to Arvinder Khurana, president of the All India Mobile Retailers Association, an industry body with 25,000 stores, small retailers purchased most of the handsets during the festive sales from online aggregators or proxy buyers. These are people with multiple accounts in ecommerce marketplaces who buy products in bulk and resell them to retailers at a small margin.

“Some of these were sold even below the offline distributor prices,” said Khurana.

Small mobile phone retailers across Mumbai have stocked up such handsets and resold them to consumers, often without valid invoices, said Mumbai Mobile Retailers Welfare Association president Vibhooti Prasad. The association represents over 4,800 retailers in the city.

Amazon and Flipkart said they have checks and balances to prevent bulk purchases and ensure that only end-customers get access to deals. An Amazon India spokesperson said the marketplace has purchase limits and deploys machine learning tools to identify and prevent misuse.

“We have a dedicated team that detects abusive reseller behaviour and is equipped to stop malpractices without compromising on customer trust,” the person said.
