“We have submitted a prototype of smart post offices which can run like ATM machines. People can transact and avail an array of postal facilities instantly and without hassles,” ITI Limited Chairman K Alagesan told ETTelecom.
The proposal, submitted to the Ravi Shankar Prasad-headed department is under evaluation and it is expected to soon come out with a strategy to channelise smart kiosks to further widen financial inclusion coverage combined with the digital delivery of services.
The state-run telecom gear manufacturer’s innovative approach would provide value addition to the postal department’s offerings, and according to the top executive, the firm is confident to bag order from the India Post for equipment production and supply.
The department has been aggressively implementing a slew of digital initiatives after it has modernised 1.55 lakh post offices across the country in partnership with state-driven Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) and IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) which has deployed Core System Integration (CSI).
The India Post-TCS initiative, closely followed by providing hand-held devices to postmen to offer a wide array of postal services that include banking, insurance, and cash management to people living in rural and remote regions.
The department has recently launched the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) to provide banking services to every household.
Alagesan has also said that the state-owned company has been witnessing a surge in growth rate, and with the strong order book, he expects annual income to grow by almost 50% in next 2 to 3 years.
Bengaluru-based ITI has posted a 20% rise in revenue to Rs 2,051 crore in 2018-19 fiscal, from Rs 1,703 crore a year ago.
In June this year, the state-owned enterprise has also inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under former secretary Aruna Sundararajan, to drive Make in India and Digital India programs.
