NEW DELHI: Motorola, InFocus and OnePlus introduced their latest devices globally from India on Tuesday, a day after Google launched its newest Android One smartphone with Lava Mobiles, underlining the criticality of the South Asian nation amid early indications that growth in developed markets may be tapering.
Motorola Mobility brought out its third-generation
Moto G in two variants, while InFocus launched new product categories including smartphones, tablets and TVs for the Indian consumer, targeting $1 billion in revenue from the country by March 2017.

“Smartphone is the biggest growth engine for the ICT (information and communication technology) category in the world. India has the maximum potential of doing it in the next 3-5 years, be it mobile phones or any other category in the ICT sector,” said Sachin Thapar, who was recently appointed head of India operations at InFocus.

“India has been chosen as the first strategic country to expand into new segments including smartphones, feature phones, hybrid tablets and a full range of HD, UHD TVs,” he added.

InFocus, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, has extensive tie-ups with
Foxconn and has jointly invested in manufacturing units to make smartphones and televisions in India for local consumption. Foxconn plans to invest up to $2 billion to set up 10-12 units for electronic products by 2020, although the Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant isn’t the only one looking at India for the long term.

Over the past six months, Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean smartphone makers have declared India their next phone-making destination and their new consumer market.

“There is enough growth left in the huge Indian market as smartphone penetration of the total user base is still in the low 30s. The Indian market still has a lot of room for new vendors to grow,” said Tina Lu, senior analyst at Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

More than seven brands entered the India handset market in the three months ended June, including Coolpad’s Dazen, Meizu, ZTE’s Nubia and PhiComm.

India had approximately 116 million Internet-enabled smartphones by the end of 2014, which is expected to reach 369 million by 2018, according to a recent KPMG & IAMAI report. The figures indicate a vastly under-penetrated handset market with massive scope for smartphone growth. Conversely, in developed markets, analysts are seeing early signs of growth slowing as smartphone consumption approaches saturation.

Motorola, which revived and turned around its global smartphone business on the back of strong sales in India over last year, says the country is among its top three markets by sales “in some months” and is “super critical” when it comes to prioritising launches of the latest smartphones and even the Moto 360 smart watch.

Most of the new entrants are aligning their plans to Indian needs and future trends. Most devices are in the affordable range with dual-band
LTE capability as Indian carriers expand their 4G services across India. Motorola has now made all its devices LTE compatible and will add dual-band capability.

Motorola, InFocus and OnePlus introduced their latest devices globally from India on Tuesday, a day after Google launched its newest Android One smartphone with Lava Mobiles, underlining the criticality of the South Asian nation amid early indications that growth in developed markets may be tapering.
["Devices","Foxconn","LTE","InFocus","Moto G","oneplus
devices/smartphone-makers-eye-india-amid-signs-of-slowing-global-growth"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="Devices" data-category_id="12" data-date="2015-07-29" data-index="article_1">
