\"SNEA<\/figure>NEW DELHI: BSNL employees union- the Sanchar Nigam Executives\u2019 Association (SNEA<\/a>) has written to the telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad<\/a> saying that an \u201cundue delay\u201d in the renewal of its crucial 2G license is affecting its GSM<\/a> and 3G services across the country.

In a letter dated November 27, K. Sebastin, Secretary-General of SNEA sought Prasad\u2019s immediate intervention for license renewal and for the allocation of the 2G spectrum.

The telco has asked the telecom minister to direct the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to renew its pan-India Cellular Mobile Telephone Service (CMTS) license and allocate 2G spectrum in 20 circles, as per the publication.

<\/div><\/div>Due to delays in the replacement of faulty core and Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment, including Base Transceiver Station (BTS) cards, the telco\u2019s services are getting affected across the country. It further requires permission from DoT\u2019s Wireless Planning and Coordinating (WPC) wing to import BTS cards and related equipment from foreign vendors.

The group also highlighted in the letter that without a license and spectrum, BSNL is also unable to get necessary clearances from the Standing Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency Allocation (SACFA) to install and commission additional BTSs.

Sebastin also said that the telecom department was yet to approve BSNL\u2019s request for license renewal across 20 service areas, except in Mumbai and Delhi.

The state-run telco has previously written to the telecom department (DoT) flagging that any non-investment in 2G networks will impact its revenue stream and will put it at a significant disadvantage in the market, as per a Financial Express report.

The ailing telco wrote to the government after a committee headed by department's Member (Technology) K Ramchand recommended that the telco should not procure any 2G equipment, not even for replacement.

<\/div><\/div>BSNL, which is facing stiff competition from Big 3 telcos--Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, intends to use its 2G network to provide both 2G and 3G services until it is allocated 4G spectrum.

The ailing telco had applied for a license on 28 February 2020.

BSNL, as a part of phase - IX network expansion, wanted to upgrade as many as 49,300 sites to 4G and the addition of 7,000 new sites in two metropolitans- Delhi and Mumbai for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).
