“For everything you need, you will have to do it through a smartphone. Smartphone is important. People who wanted to purchase have been not been able to since last month. There is definitely going to be a surge in demand once the lockdown is lifted,” Poco India General Manager, C Manmohan, told ET.

“Some countries have treated smartphones as essential...after daily groceries, smartphone is the second most important item," he added.

Analysts, however, feel that consumers may cut back on discretionary spending and buy phones only for immediate needs and the demand may not pick up until later this year. Currently,
smartphone sales are nil online and also practically zero offline, despite the government recently lifting some restrictions in the opening of brick and mortar stores in specific areas.

Handset brands are also awaiting permissions from state authorities to restart local production. Companies have also requested the government to include mobile handsets in the list of essential products. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has already recommended inclusion of mobile phones and other related products in the "essential goods" category.

Poco, which debuted as an independent brand earlier this year, got off to a good start by capturing a 2% market share during its first entire month of operations in March 2020. It was also among the top five brands in the Rs 15,000-20,000 price segment, as per
Counterpoint Research.

The company was selling its only phone,
Poco X2, till March 24 in India. “We didn't even have an entire quarter, still, we are able to achieve a significant market share,” Manmohan said, adding that the brand was not able to meet the demand and was selling its phone through flash sales.

“It happened because there was more demand than anticipated.”

“Display has become one of the desired features when it comes to impacting purchase decisions for smartphones…Poco did well by leveraging features like refresh rate and hit the right sweet spot in terms of pricing…there was a lot of build-ups for the Poco branded phone as it was bringing the upgrade after so many quarters,” Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counterpoint said.

The executive said that the performance of the X2 phone has given confidence to the brand to tap new price segments for a smartphone in coming months if things come down to normal.

Poco is currently working on its foray into
TWS or true wireless stereo earphone category in India.

Manmohan also revealed that the company has an interest in other connected categories, but it is diverting its energy towards the TWS category since the team is small and can work on limited products at a time. “There is definitely interest in categories.”

He also said that Poco is looking to expand its team to support its India operations. “We are betting big on India and are continuously focusing on looking out for people.”
