A fireside chat with Udit Mehrotra \u2013 CEO & MD, Spectra<\/a><\/strong> was moderated by The Economic Times Telecom Assistant Editor - Danish Khan<\/strong> on the Role of Open and Disaggregated Technology for High-Speed Fixed-Access Networks<\/strong>. Mehrotra began by describing the strategy on how Spectra was going to become a Networks as a Service B2B provider and explained why open and disaggregated networks will make it possible, and affirmed, \u201cOur vision is to transform ourselves from historically being a fibre internet<\/a> service provider to being a full-fledged Network as a Service provider. Our goal is to provide industry specific solutions to the SMB<\/a> segment. Historically those have only been made available to large enterprises, but one thing that has become very clear during the pandemic is that networks are important to everybody and everyone needs to be able to go digital\u201d.
He further elaborated, \u201cAs we move forward on that journey, open and disaggregated networks become important for us; as we look at bringing in more innovation, speed to market and business specific solutions, those technologies enable that.\u201d Mehrotra stressed how working with open and disaggregated networks facilitates a local pool of companies who are able to provide the innovative solutions they need to meet their customer requirements both in terms of quality and cost.
<\/div><\/div>In terms of next steps, he highlighted bringing high bandwidth services in a cost-effective manner to their SMB customers, by expanding core network capacity and taking it to the edge, to the customer location; and in due time, more software-defined network solutions, to enable the provision of industry specific solutions on top of the high-speed core and edge network.
Prompted by Khan, Mehrotra emphasized the role and contribution of TIP<\/a> in the telecom ecosystem as a whole and in the India market in particular, \u201cTIP has been both an enabler and a catalyst. TIP is able to aggregate the demand, work with both the supply and demand sides, to make the evolution towards open and disaggregated networks happen faster. Being an industry-neutral body, it gives TIP a lot more credibility.
In his final remarks talking about how open and disaggregated technologies will shape up the market in the future, Spectra\u2019s CEO said, \u201cOver the next few years, we are going to see a tremendous shift in how businesses consume network services. Up to now it was all about, bandwidth availability and affordability. But moving forward the quality of the service itself is going to become increasingly important.
