Ranchi/Dumka: BSNL’s Jharkhand unit has approached the state authorities and the PSU’s senior management in Delhi over the “illegal detention and ill treatment” of two officials at Dumka police station on Monday night. BSNL employees’ union has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking action against those responsible for the act.

On Monday, two senior Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) officials were detained at a Dumka police station as “punishment” because there was no mobile netowrk at
Raj Bhavan, where chief minister Raghubar Das was staying. The two BSNL officers — Dumka telecom district manager PK Singh and assistant junior telecom officer Sanjeev Kumar — were detained at the town police station for several hours before they were released.

In a letter addressed to Jharkhand chief secretary

Taking strong exception to the incident, he said the detention, which deprived the two of their personal liberties, was in violation of Article 21 of the Constitution.

In a separate letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, All Unions and Associations of BSNL (AUAB ) convener P Abhimanyu said “We are prompted to bring this incident to the notice of the Prime Minister because the police are merely a tool in this violation of human rights, and the actual perpetrator of the crime is the chief minister of Jharkhand, at the behest of whom the police have acted.”

In the letter, copies of which have been sent to Union home minister Rajnath Singh, minister of state for communications Manoj Sinha and other senior officials of the telecom department, Abhimanyu said that the detention of two BSNL officers by Jharkhand police is a “clear violation of human rights as well as the law of the land”.

Thakur wrote to BSNL headquarters after P K Singh, one of the two officials detained, complained about the incident of Monday night. In a letter addressed to Thakur and commissioner of Santhal Pargana division, Singh said he received a call from the DC’s office about 8pm asking him to report at
Raj Bhavan immediately. “I along with DDE (telecom) Sanjeev Kumar went to Raj Bhavan in Dumka, where we were told to ensure mobile connectivity within an hour.”

When he replied that the signal is week and he will look into the matter, the DC misbehaved with him. Using unparliamentary language, DC Mukesh Kumar ordered the SDPO to keep both the officials at the police station till the issue was resolved. The two BSNL officials were taken to the police station, where they spent the entire Monday night, before they were released aroud 5am on Tuesday, the letter said.
