Agra: Like cars earlier, stolen high-end mobile phones are being broken down by thieves to be sold part by part, instead of in one piece. In Agra alone, mobile phones worth more than Rs 2 crore were reported lost and sold in just the last seven months.

As per data retrieved from Government Railway Police (GRP) of Agra division, FIRs about 101 mobile phones being lost or stolen were lodged, while GRP recovered another 300 mobile phones from robbers and thieves.

Speaking to TOI, senior superintendent of police (SSP) for GRP, Gopeshnath Khanna said, “The thieves have become smart while disposing off the stolen high-end
smartphones. Now, the thieves are dismantling the phone to sell it part by part instead of in one piece.”

Sharing an example, Khanna said, “An iPhone 6 touch screen, whose original price is Rs 5,000 is available for Rs 3,000, while Samsung Galaxy A7 screen and body frame is being sold at Rs 5,000 in a plastic casing. Even the batteries of phones are sold for as high as Rs 1,500 - Rs 2,000. The thieves are aware that if they keep the stolen phone intact, they will be traced by the 16-digit IMEI number, so they prefer to earn some thousand bucks by selling the
parts.”

The SSP added that since January, the number of cases registered for lost and stolen phones by civil police in Agra was more than a thousand. “So we are talking about a multi-crore market for stolen parts,” he said.

These phones parts are sent to Delhi’s Gaffar Market, Agra’s Shah Market, Lucknow’s Naka Market, Manish Market and Lamington Road in Mumbai, Fancy Market of Khidirpur of Kolkata and several other mobile markets in various cities, officials said.
