Remember a time when getting an extra 4GB or 8GB (if you were in an extravagant mood) of SD card gave you the feeling of having immense storage on your smartphone? Well, technology evolved and slowly smartphone makers started offering more respectable amounts of storage yet they relied on users to buy microSD cards. Even now with Samsung offering 1TB of in-built storage with its latest flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S10 Plus – microSD cards are making a statement of intent.

At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (
MWC) 2019 in Barcelona, the SD Association has announced a new storage format for smartphones which are supposedly the “fastest memory cards for mobile devices.” In addition to that, two companies have also unveiled the world’s first 1TB microSD cards.

As per several news reports, both
Micron and Western Digital’s Sandisk have launched the world’s first 1TB microSD cards. The Sandisk claims to come with read speed of 160MB per second and write speed of 90MB per second. On the other hand, Micron’s 1TB microSD card offers read speed of 100MB per second and write speed of 95MB per second.

Micron hasn’t announced the price of its 1TB microSD card. Meanwhile the Sandisk card will cost a whopping $450 (roughly Rs 31,300). That, to be fair, sounds like a lot of money for extra storage on a smartphone.

Meanwhile, MWC 2019 has already seen a host of companies launch a slew of smartphones. HMD Global’s Nokia has unveiled as many as four new devices while LG too has launched a handful of new devices. The biggest talking point of MWC, however, has been the world’s first foldable 5G phone unveiled by Huawei, called the Mate X. This is the second foldable phone that has been launched in the space of few days as Samsung on February 20 showcased its Galaxy Fold along with three new other smartphones at an event in San Francisco.
