Chennai: The Software Technology Parks of India, with a wide network of offices across India, will play the role of an enabler and facilitator between Data Centre investors and states for approvals, said Union Minister of State for electronics & information technology (MeitY) Rajeev Chandrasekhar said here on Friday.

“Representatives from the industry suggested coordination and facilitation at the state level as establishing
Data Centres needs approval and ensuring green energy supply. Hence, we have made STPI as the enabler and facilitator between entrepreneurs and investors and various state governments,” he said. The minister was in the city for a consultative meeting with industry comprising startups and MSMEs among others on the Draft National Data Centre and Cloud Policy.

“They offered high quality suggestions on Data Centres and Cloud, the issues concerning the states and exit and entry into the Cloud. Representatives from states including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana too were present. This is a very good
policy and addresses key issues like sustainability and green data centres,” he said.

“States like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are very keen to do that. The policy would usher in sizeable investments and states that act fast would get the bulk of these investments. This is the Y2K moment for the digital space. In the Cloud space over the next one or two years, a few Unicorns will emerge from India, which is predestined to being a data and Cloud provider to the world,” he said.

The size of the digital economy in India is estimated to grow exponentially from around $200 billion to $1 trillion by 2025-26. At present, India has 499 MW installed power capacity for Data Centres and the Centre plans to add an additional 2,000 MW capacity in next five years. Under the hyperscale data centre scheme, the government is targeting an investment of Rs three lakh crore in the next five years.

About 80 crore Indians are online now and in the next two years 1.2 billion Internet users will be there in the country for various purposes. Cyber security becomes paramount and the Centre has created many institutions to make Internet safe and secure, he said.

The minister said the Centre has committed around $30 billion to promote electronics and semiconductor ecosystem. Almost all leading global names in electronics manufacturing are in India and states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh have benefitted. “We expect the same to happen in the semiconductor space,” he said.
