He will be succeeded by Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, as ICC Chairman. Ajay Banga, the President and CEO of MasterCard will be appointed as the ICC First Vice-Chair.
Sunil Mittal<\/a> was only the third Indian to have been appointed the chairman of the ICC since it was constituted in 1919. He will now function as the Honorary Chairman of the ICC commencing July 1.
In his two year tenure at the helm, the Bharti Enterprise Chief has been credited for working towards promoting rules-based policy-making to enable inclusive trade, innovation and job-creation on behalf of more than 6 million members of ICC worldwide.
“It has been a pleasure to lead and play a constructive role in giving shape to the voice of global business to support inclusive growth,” Mittal said, while talking about his tenure as the chairman of ICC.
ICC in its statement lauded Mittal for having made the organisation “truly global” under his leadership, highlighting in particular his meeting with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at UN headquarters in New York on April 17, 2017; the first such meeting after ICC was granted the Observer Status at the UN general assembly in 2016. Mittal, as the chair for ICC, also met global leaders such as US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Brazilian President Michel Temer.
Mittal has also been credited with making ICC more diverse under his chairmanship.
Amidst the growing concerns of a global trade war, Mittal in the last few months, has been warning the US that tit-for-tat tariff increase and a progressive closing of the world’s largest economy to trade would damage both US and global growth prospects, the statement by ICC said.
“Sunil’s business acumen and leadership on some of the most pertinent business issues of our time have resulted in significant milestones for ICC, extending our reach & influence and making business work for everyone, everywhere,” said ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton who commenced as ICC Secretary General in May.
