The five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court<\/a> led by CJI Dipak Misra<\/a> has struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act that which provided that private companies could ask consumers for Aadhaar details for identification purposes.

This means that now you will not have to link your mobile number or even bank account with Aadhaar. Now private companies cannot insist on Aadhaar details of the consumers.

The deadline for Aadhaar linkage with mobile numbers had been extended to March 31, 2018 from the previous deadline of December 31, 2017. However, in March, the Supreme Court had said in a ruling that the mandatory linking of PAN, bank accounts and mobile phones would stand extended indefinitely till the verdict in the Aadhaar case.

Private companies, such as Facebook, too had started trials for Aadhaar details. Last year, Facebook tested a new feature which encourages those opening new accounts to submit their names as in their Aadhaar cards. This was an optional prompt and users are not required to enter the name on their Aadhaar card.

Facebook was not the first private agency to ask for Aadhaar details. Online retailer Amazon had asked customers to upload their Aadhaar numbers to track lost packages. A Bengaluru-based car rental platform Zoomcar had said it won't accept bookings without Aadhaar as proof of identity.

However, with the Supreme Court now striking down Section 57, you would not need to share your Aadhaar details with any private company.
