Rabin Patra, co-Founder, Tarana Wireless.

NEW DELHI: Taking fibre broadband to each household in rural India may not be feasible due to the huge investment, thereby wireless solutions like Fixed Wireless Acess (FWA) will play a crucial role in the country, a top executive of the US-based FWA gear maker Tarana Wireless said, adding that the company is in talks with Indian telcos to provide its 5G FWA equipment for their commercial services.

“Wireline infrastructure is definitely needed. The penetration of fibre in urban areas, especially as backbone fibre is good. The government has put a lot of investment in the
BharatNet project to take fiber to every district headquarters, every taluka and gram panchayat,” Rabin Patra, co-Founder of Tarana Wireless, told ETTelecom in an interview. "For last mile access, a combination of fixed wireless and fibre backbone is the right solution. Taking the fibre to every gram panchayat, every taluka, that is very important. That's why I think a lot of investment is still needed."

BharatNet is the Centre’s ambitious project to provide broadband connectivity to all the gram panchayats (approx. 2.6 lakh GPs) in the country. The first phase of the project was completed in December 2017, covering 1 lakh GPs. According to the Ministry of Communications, as on October 31, 2022, 6,00,898 kilometre of optical fibre cable (OFC) has been laid and a total of 1,90,364 GPs have been connected with OFC while 1,77,665 GPs are service ready.

The broadband penetration in India, as per the executive, is abysmal with one of the major bottlenecks being inadequate last-mile connectivity.

According to the company, there is a market of $32-40 billion for broadband services in the country. “[A] similar market size is there in the US. The revenue per user is higher but the number of users is lower in number,” said the executive.

The company, which started its operations in India in 2017, is in discussions with Indian telecom operators on
5G FWA. “We had some initial deployments in India with some of these telcos. They have done extensive drive testing in multiple places including Pune and Delhi,” he said.

Jio has launched its 5G FWA device — the Jio AirFiber — with which it is targeting 100 million households. The telco is however yet to announce the details on commercial availability and pricing. Airtel too has yet to announce its FWA service in India.

Prashant Singhal, EY Global TMT Emerging Markets Leader has earlier told ETTelecom that 5G has the potential to significantly improve India’s fixed broadband penetration by households through FWA services in urban as well as rural areas. 5G FWA is expected to be complementary to fiber rollout, offering a viable alternative in areas where fixed broadband is not available

According to the latest data from the Global mobile Suppliers Association, 104 operators in 56 countries and territories had launched or soft-launched 3GPP-compliant 5G FWA services — just over 42% of those with launched 5G services

Singhal said that In India, 5G FWA has the potential to offer a flexible and cost-effective solution to connect sparsely populated areas. The higher bandwidth available in households through 5G FWA would help to connect more devices and open-up access to a gamut of services such as ultra-high definition content, remote learning, and immersive gaming. 5G FWA could be the answer to bridge India’s digital divide.

In the United States, as per Tarana, due to the use of base stations in the high frequency bands, the cost of deployment is high and telecom operators there are finding it difficult to sell FWA commercially. Another hurdle, it noted, is the high cost of consumer equipment which will become affordable with economies of scale.

Tarana Wireless has raised a total of $376.1 million in eight rounds from investors such as Khosla Ventures, TPG-Axon Capital,
Prime Movers Lab among others, according to data available on Crunchbase, and the company is valued at about $1 billion.

Patra, however, declined to comment on the investments being made into India. Globally, Tarana is present in 15 countries with customers present in the United States, Canada, South America, Mexico, Africa, among others.

Tarana is opening a new office in Pune, which will primarily focus on research and development (R&D) of new products. This will expand the company’s India headcount from 90 currently to 200.

Patra said the company is seriously looking at "local manufacturing" of its products in India. “India is also becoming a big hub for electronics manufacturing, and the contract manufacturers in India are definitely doing this. This is something we're going to be seriously going to look at.”

“We do all the design, validation, everything on our own, but we do have contract manufacturers who manufacture it. We are already manufacturing in multiple countries. We started off in the US, but we contracted manufacturers outside the US,” he added.
