""MUMBAI: Tech Mahindra is working on further boosting its integrated engineering unit with partnerships, investing internally and, potentially, more acquisitions as it looks to capitalize on the opportunities in the automotive space.

Last month, Tech Mahindra and auto company
Mahindra & Mahindra bought 76% of Pininfarina in a joint venture. TechM will own 60% of the JV, while M&M will own 40%. They will also make an open offer for Pinifarina’s shares and infuse money through a rights issue.

“We are seeing three trends affecting the automotive market. One, better customer experience either through technology like analytics or styling. Two, autonomous vehicles – where we can provide services in data analytics on bugs or over-the-air software updates. Three, emissions control as cars look to become greener or use alternative fuels. We are investing in all of these,”
Karthikeyan Natarajan, global head, integrated engineering services, at Tech Mahindra, told ET.

"" Natarajan added that the company was looking at all options to boost automotive capabilities of the engineering services unit – including building internal resources, partnerships and more acquisitions. On Monday, TechM said it had worked to bring in internet-of-things technology to the electric scooter Mahindra GenZe has launched in the US.

“We were brought in as consultants about 18 months ago to make it a connected experience. This is the first phase. We are working on phases two and three,” Karthikeyan said. Scooters were displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show in the US. The connected bike will have remote diagnostics, will track usage patterns and stolen vehicles and map routes, TechM said.

While deals like these are not large, they are valuable proving points as Indian IT firms chase bigger deals in the digital space. TechM is already working on modules to help add autonomous capabilities to vehicles, Natarajan said.

“We are already building modules with advanced driver assist features, navigation features, traffic features. Any autonomous vehicle will need these. The first self-drive car may not launch until 2018 but you will see these features being used in trucks, in fleets. That’s the opportunity,” Natarajan said.

Experts have said the engineering services market is growing strongly and TechM’s bets, such as Pininfarina, will help the company gain in the market, as more companies want vehicles to be smart and connected.

“They could bring together the IT and the engineering for smart cars. There is also a broader transportation play because Pininfairna has also designed high-speed trains and aeroplanes,” Dinesh Goel, partner and India head at outsourcing advisory company ISG, told ET.

Last month, Tech Mahindra and auto company Mahindra & Mahindra bought 76% of Pininfarina in a joint venture.
["Enterprise IT","Tech Mahindra","Mahindra & Mahindra","Karthikeyan Natarajan","Pininfarina","Automotive
telecomnews/tech-mahindra-still-eyeing-options-to-boost-its-engineering-services"}}" data-authors="[" jochelle mendonca"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-01-06" data-index="article_1">
