Mumbai: Employees in at least one sector - telecom - have something to cheer amid the crisis brought on by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Mobile phone operators
Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio Infocomm and equipment maker Ericsson are among those rewarding employees who have been out in the field during the lockdown to ensure that mobile networks run smoothly, towers are maintained and broadband connection lags are fixed as India Inc worked from home.

These three companies and a few tower and
telecom infrastructure firms are incentivising their employees through cash rewards and e-vouchers.

“We are incentivising field maintenance and network engineers who are keeping the networks running at this time,” Sweden’s Ericsson told ET.

Vodafone Idea and Jio did not respond to ET’s queries. Airtel is not providing similar incentives.

“Telecom infrastructure firms are giving out cash incentives worth Rs 1,000-Rs 5,000 along with vouchers of e-commerce firms,” said Rituparna Chakraborty, cofounder of
TeamLease Services. “Some of our clients are even hosting video calls to appreciate those who have worked over time, done repair works despite the challenging times.”

The Bengaluru-based staffing firm provides contract employees to telecom infrastructure firms.

“Technicians, engineers, support staff, maintenance teams and line engineers have been working during these difficult times to provide seamless connectivity - both voice and data. It’s good to see how companies are recognising and providing incentives to the ground warriors,” a large tower company said, declining to be identified.

Interestingly, the contract staff – those on third-party payrolls – are getting appreciated by their clients for the additional effort. The telecom sector is largely dependent on contract employees, who had seen their prospects fade as consolidation shrank an eight-company market to one run by three private operators now.

“Clients are paying fortnightly bonusses to those who have worked overtime for a few days. In some cases, they have given more than the annual bonus that was dispatched in April,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, director of
CIEL HR Services.

The chief executive officer of a Chennai-based telecom solutions company, whose employees are contracted for tower cell maintenance, was asked by his clients to give a month and a half salary as incentive to all those who worked on those sites during the lockdown.
