The cyber crooks used the SIMs to create fake WhatsApp accounts of Lok Sabha<\/a> Speaker Om Birla with the purpose of cheating and fraud.
“We found the complicity of Deepak Kumar Nayak<\/a> (24), the territorial sales manager of the private telecom service provider with the gang. Nayak, who was looking after Gajapati district, ported the pre-activated SIMs of other companies to his company. He has links with Dusmant Sahoo<\/a>, the main accused, who had supplied the SIMs to the cyber criminals,” a Crime Branch officer said.
Nayak was earlier arrested by Orkel police in Malkangiri district in connection with a house trespass and theft case in April 2019. Police had filed a chargesheet against him in the case.
The Crime Branch recently arrested Dusmant Sahoo, Sai Prakash Das and Abhinas Nayak for selling the pre-activated SIM<\/a>s illegally in the state and outside. Subsequently, the Crime Branch arrested Dolagobinda Parida, a direct seller of SIM cards of a company for his link with the gang.
The probe agency asked SPs to conduct regular raids on stores and selling illegal pre-activated SIMs.
