In what could be a sign of a revival, Vodafone Idea has for the first time added active mobile users since the merger of the two entities - Vodafone India and Idea Cellular four years back.

The company has not been impacted by SIM consolidation post the tariff hikes by the
industry last year. It saw active subscriber net additions of 0.2 million in March, the first positive net-add month, post-merger of two telecom players taking the active user base at 226 million.

However, the third largest loss making telecom player needs to immediately close its pending fundraise plan of Rs 10,000 crore from external investors to accelerate network investments, arrest declining market share and plan for next generation technology 5G.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) also plans to speed up 2G-to-4G customer migrations to drive growth in its average revenue per user (ARPU) - which is a key matrix for profitability.

Sunil Mittal-led
Bharti Airtel, though, added the highest number of active mobile users – 4.6 million – among India’s top telcos in March while Reliance Jio reported almost flattish growth on this count at 0.3 million, which indicated that the Mukesh Ambani-led telco’s dormant users clean-up drive is virtually over.

Vi also plans to push its users on higher usage plans - unlimited data packs to pay more and not tinker much with entry-level packs once it takes the next round of price hikes.

The aim is to double ARPU to around Rs 250 and boost cash generation, especially as its yearly payouts are estimated at a whopping Rs 40,000 crore once the moratorium on deferred spectrum and AGR (adjusted gross revenue) payments ends in October 2025.

With Vi likely to adopt a premiumisation strategy reflected in higher price hikes on unlimited data plans, 4G customer growth would become doubly important for the telco.

On the back of tariff hikes, Vi has managed to narrow its March quarter net loss to Rs 6,544.9 crore from Rs 7,234.1 crore in the previous three-month period. The ARPU also increased to Rs 124. Vi’s managing director Ravinder Takkar had said Vi is looking to boost ARPU from the present Rs 124 level to Rs 200 in the short-term and to Rs 250 in the long term and said there is enough opportunity to push through another price hike and does not see inflation as an impediment.

Vi’s management is counting on the 2G-to-4G upgrades cycle and future tariff hikes to take its ARPU to Rs 200, especially since telecom remains an essential service and accounts for a tiny share of overall customer wallet.

In another major development, the government will hold around 33% in Vi, post-conversion of the latter’s accrued interest liability (on deferred dues) into equity, while the telco’s promoters—UK’s Vodafone Plc and India’s Aditya Birla Group (ABG)—will collectively hold 50% in the company.

The
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has computed the net present value (NPV) of the accrued interest due to the four-year deferral of spectrum and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) payments at Rs 16,133.1 crore, a calculation since confirmed by Vi. At present, UK’s Vodafone Plc and ABG own 47.61% and 27.38% in Vi respectively.

Cultural differences between disparate merging organisations have led to struggles that Vodafone Idea – the telecom JV between UK’s Vodafone Plc and India’s Aditya Birla Group – faces today, according to Bharti Enterprises Chairman
Sunil Mittal.

Vi merger did not work as “UK’s Vodafone is an MNC with a very open culture, whereas the Birlas “are a large business enterprise rooted in India with a financial-results orientation”.

Lastly, the largest telecom player Reliance Jio added 1.26 million gross users in March after a three-month decline as the cleanup of dormant, low-value customers seemingly came to an end.

Jio also consolidated its leadership in the home broadband market as it added 0.24 million customers to its JioFibre service in March, taking its fixed broadband user base to 5.3 million. Airtel added 0.10 million such users, boosting its home broadband user base to 4.5 million.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) – the No 3 wired broadband player -- reported flattish user gains at 0.04 million, leaving its home broadband user base stagnant at 3.9 million, underlining its inability to compete effectively with Jio and Airtel.

Bharti Airtel continued its streak, adding 2.25 million customers, bringing its tally to 360.03 million subscribers, while Vodafone Idea's subscriber losses continued, as the telco lost 2.81 million customers as the first quarter of 2022 came to an end.
