Reliance Jio has toppled state-run telecom PSU BSNL from its top position in India’s home broadband market.

Jio has emerged as the country’s top wired broadband operator in just two years of launching the service commercially. Jio added 0.19 million JioFibre customers in November 2021, taking its fixed broadband user base to 4.3 million, overtaking both BSNL with 4.2 million and Bharti Airtel with 4.1 million.

Since the advent of 4G mobile services, BSNL has been steadily losing its market share in the mobile segment (BSNL still has not been able to launch its 4G services) but was holding onto the broadband segment. But with lagging investments and fierce competition from private players, BSNL’s broadband space has now been captured by Jio.

Jio launched its services towards the end of 2016 and is already the largest telecom service provider. The entry has disrupted the telecom sector in India leading to consolidation.

Marching ahead, Jio has inked a strategic partnership with the University of Oulu, Finland, for undertaking research and standardization-related activities in 6G technology. Both will collaborate in Research and Development (R&D) of aerial and space communication, holographic beamforming, 3D-connected intelligence in cybersecurity, microelectronics, and photonics.

The collaborative effort will aid in competing with 6G enabled products in the defense, automotive, white goods, industrial machinery, consumer goods, efficient manufacturing, novel personal smart device environments, and experiences such as urban computing and autonomous traffic settings.

This collaboration will further extend Jio's
5G capabilities and will help explore use cases in the 6G-era, in addition to research and development of the technology itself.

This development came at a time when all three players - Jio,
Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are piloting locally relevant 5G use cases using the 5G trial spectrum allotted by the government.

For the third quarter ended December,
Jio Platforms (JPL) net profit grew nearly 9% year-on-year driven by higher data and voice consumption and growing average revenue per user (ARPU). But the company lost mobile phone subscribers for the second time like the previous quarter. ARPU, a key performance parameter, for the telecom business grew sequentially to Rs 151.6 from Rs 143.6 in the previous quarter.

While the struggling
Vodafone Idea (Vi) net loss for the fiscal third quarter widened to Rs 7,234.1 crore from Rs 7,144.6 crore in the previous one as operating and interest expenses rose. But the telco’s ARPU rose sequentially, partly helped by steep prepaid tariff hikes taken last November, which, though, led to more customer losses. Quarterly revenue for the cash-strapped operator increased over 3% sequentially to Rs 9,717.3 crore in the October-December quarter, while ARPU rose to Rs115 from Rs109 in the previous quarter.

Satcom: Jio vs
OneWeb

A battle is brewing between Jio and
OneWeb, backed by Bharti Group, over the method of allocation of spectrum for satcom services.

Jio has said to Trai, “Contrary to what is being pedalled by many stakeholders, administrative allocation is no longer the only mode of allocating spectrum to satellite and associated activities and auction of spectrum is being increasingly favoured across the world.

“Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Thailand, are among several countries where spectrum auction for satellite services has been announced or held recently. Auction of spectrum is not only feasible, but is also gaining ground as a mode of allocating spectrum resources, even in countries with no legal binding such as India.”

In its original submission to Trai, Jio had batted for assignment of satellite spectrum only via auction, saying such a move would be in step with the Supreme Court’s 2012 verdict that had backed allocation of airwaves through transparent auctions alone. While Airtel has advocated administratively allocation of spectrum.

However, OneWeb has told the telecom regulator that no spectrum has been auctioned for fixed satellite services (FSS) in Brazil, or is intended in Mexico, Thailand or Saudi Arabia, rejecting
Reliance Jio’s claim that auction of spectrum for broadband-from-space services is rapidly gaining ground globally.

Jio is already embroiled in a high-stakes slugfest with global satellite players over auctioning coveted 28 Ghz mmWave spectrum band -- currently used exclusively for satellite services but considered highly efficient for 5G services.

In a separate development, OneWeb and Hughes Communications India Pvt Ltd (HCIPL) have inked a six-year distribution pact to provide broadband-from-space connectivity services across India. HCIPL is a 67:33 joint venture between US-based Hughes Bharti Airtel. OneWeb is expected to start satellite broadband services in India from mid-2022, and will connect towns, villages, and local and regional municipalities in the hardest-to-reach areas.

US airlines & 5G

The US Federal Aviation Administrator (FAA) recently warned that 5G signals in the C spectrum band – with band range from 3.3-4.2 GHz – could interfere with aircraft altimeter systems which typically operate in the nearby 4.2-4.4 GHz range.

This had led to Air India cancelling eight US-bound flights on Wednesday amid widespread disruptions in air travel caused by concerns over the rollout of 5G services in the US and their impact on radar altimeters and auto-pilot systems. The airline resumed Boeing 777 operations to the country Thursday.

In India, the aviation ministry is likely to hold discussions with industry stakeholders and the telecom department (DoT) before the launch of 5G mobile broadband services in India to deal with concerns which have emerged in the US.

India plans to auction 5G spectrum around April-May. C-band spectrum in the 3.3-3.67 GHz range for 5G services will also be put up for sale in the upcoming auctions.
