It’s been two months since the government announced a relief package for the industry. But, Vodafone Idea is yet to make any headway on fundraising which is critical for its survival in a hyper competitive Indian telecom market.

The relief package by the government was expected to renew interest from investors. The firm has been trying to raise funds of about Rs 25,000 crore since September 2020

However, discussions were stalled over the financial position of the cash strapped telco.

Vodafone Idea expects its discussions with lenders and investors to yield fruitful results by the end of current fiscal i.e March 2022. But a wait for another few months may adversely impact the company which already has been losing market share and lagging behind its competitors
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in 4G expansion.

While the government's relief package eased immediate cash flow constraints for Vodafone Idea, it needs about US$1 billion, at the very least, over the next 6-9 months to repay its non-spectrum debt and ride through these four years with minimal capex, according to brokerage firm Credit Suisse.

Last week, Vodafone Idea posted a net loss of Rs 7,144.6 crore for the fiscal second quarter and is weighed down by debt of over Rs1.9 lakh crore and has around Rs 6,000 crore of non-convertible debentures maturing by February 2022. Besides, a payment of Rs 2,000 crore a quarter to the government towards current license fee and spectrum usage charge. But with its cash and cash equivalents as of end-September at Rs 250 crore, it has already written to the telecom department to allow it to delay payment of those statutory dues.

Analysts firms opine that without any significant fundraising, VI’s network investments and 5G rollout would remain constrained, at least in the near term, leading to further market share erosion. The recent structural reforms in the telecom sector are positive and delay near-term liquidity challenges for Vi and also ensure a three-player market. But it does not expect the reforms alone to “materially change Vi’s ability to invest in capex without a capital raise or a substantial tariff hike”.

On the other hand, loss-making telecom PSU
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) extended the trials of its fourth-generation or 4G services by two months which may further delay the commercial rollout of 4G network. Owing to delay in network expansion, BSNL is yet to start 4G services which have been adopted well by the Indian mobile users.BSNL expects 4G network rollout within 10 months on the successful completion of trials but with the new extension, the rollout can only be expected by the end of 2022.

The disruptor in the telecom industry Reliance Jio is betting big on JioPhone Next to drive its next level of growth. The company claims it has received good response for the recently launched JioPhone Next smartphone, developed by the Reliance Industries-Google combine.

Analysts had seen the success of the new smartphone to be crucial for Jio as it targets a 500 million user base. The telecom operator had lost about 11 million users in the July-September quarter to end the period with 429.5 million subscribers.

The nascent satellite communications sector in India has seen heightened activity lately with SpaceX, OneWeb, and Telesat-Nelco firming up their India strategy. The sector is expected to trigger a new space broadband revolution, as per Jayant Patil, chairman of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), a newly-launched industry group. The total contribution of the world is more than $360 billion and Indian contribution is hardly around 2%. Out of that, the satellite communication, it is very miniscule at less than $0.3 billion. The aim is to create a policy environment.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX wants the Indian government to ensure that the upcoming satcom policy focuses more on access and less on pricing.

India’s much-awaited new Spacecom policy is likely to underline the critical role of LEO satellite system operators in boosting broadband coverage, particularly in rural India. This, even as Bharti-backed OneWeb and SpaceX prepare to launch high-speed satellite broadband services in India next year. SpaceX recently registered a 100% owned subsidiary in India, Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd (SSCPL), which will enable them to start applying for licences, starting with trial spectrum to deploy Starlink connections in Delhi schools.
