India has been among the fastest growing telecom markets in the world but the
telecom equipment space has been dominated by foreign companies including Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and earlier Chinese players Huawei and ZTE which no longer have takers following backdoor apprehensions.

With India’s own 4G and
5G stack developed by a consortium led by Tata Group’s TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), the country can take the lead in the telecom equipment market. The discussions are already on with multiple countries across the world to implement India’s 4G-5G technology stack.

But will this actually help India become self-reliant in telecom equipment manufacturing? Experts are divided. Many hardware parts are still imported, India doesn’t have full telecom manufacturing in place, according to an executive from a telecom firm. It will take a few years before (India) actually able to manufacture everything indigenously but the first step is always crucial and we are on the right track.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will be the first telecom player to roll out its 4G network by deploying the
locally developed 4G and 5G India stack. Last year, the indigenous telecom stack setup for BSNL 4G network was tested for 10 million simultaneous phone calls. Once BSNL launches locally developed telecom equipment, the government expects private telecom players also to come forward and deploy indigenous technology. With nearly 1 lakh sites in 387 districts by top players Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, India’s 5G roll-out is one of the fastest in the world.

The development of 4G and 5G stacks have been one of the top priorities of the government with an aim to
become 'Atmanirbhar' in telecom equipment manufacturing.

Communications Minister
Ashwini Vaishnaw has recently said that India was in talks with 18 countries across the world to implement the 4G-5G technology stack.
