NEW DELHI: Indian telecom operators are looking to fiberise 60-70% of towers in the country besides expanding their fiber broadband network for enterprise and home customers, which Ankit Agarwal, managing director of STL, said will grow the company’s cable, connectivity and services business.

“China does about 250 million fibre kilometres per year compared to India at 24-30 million fiber kilometres per year. So clearly, there's a huge potential. As some of the Right of Way (RoW) and deployment challenges ease out in India, I certainly think that deployment can increase significantly going forward,” he said, adding that the
BharatNet project will also play a crucial role.

Airtel and
Reliance Jio will continue deploying high-quality fibre for backhaul and FTTH services. “This will give us a good opportunity to grow our business,” he added.

Agarwal said that STL aims to be among the top three optical fiber makers globally with the full utilisation of capacity added at its global factories and further expansion at the US manufacturing factory.

“We continue to focus on the optical business. We will focus on the US factory to expand capacity, and there will be some increase in capacity on the interconnect. We intend to fully utilize these factories, which can further add to our top and bottom line growth.”

Agarwal said that STL currently has a market share of 12% globally. “In Europe, we have more than 20% share, while the US share is around 10-12%. We have a good base to scale up.”

The company capital expenditure for the ongoing fiscal will be Rs 350-400 crore, primarily aimed at capacity expansion at manufacturing facilities. “...there's a huge opportunity to grow, particularly in North America, Europe and India,” Agarwal said.

STL’s Board of Directors earlier this week approved the demerger of the Global Services business into a separate legal entity on a going concern basis. Once the shareholders and regulators approve, this decision will create a company that will drive large-scale network and IT infrastructure projects.

The shareholding of STL and the new entity will mirror each other, and the new entity will be publicly listed.

“This development will create value for the shareholders. We will have independent investors in both businesses. STL announced its foray into the multi-trillion-dollar IT services industry at the beginning of the new financial year. This was achieved through the formation of
STL Digital, which is focused on engineering digital experiences for customers across verticals, including telecom, technology, manufacturing and healthcare.

“We have around 18 global customers, predominantly from the US and Europe and a few in India with an order book of Rs 650 crore. “The business is very similar to the business of
TCS or Wipro…we started on a good foot, and I think one of the critical strengths is our customer focus and agility. I believe that is something we are quite optimistic about,” he said.
