"It's (India) probably going to be one of fastest growing regions for the next decade," Cisco chairman and chief executive Chuck Robbins told ETTelecom, adding that incredible developments are happening in the country.
" The Indian Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) was pretty excited about (manufacturing unit) it. I have to say, for those who haven't been to India since before the pandemic, it is a place that has changed rapidly," Robbins said.
In May, this year San Jose-based technology major said that it would open up a new manufacturing facility in India's Tamil Nadu in its ambition to broaden its supply chain worldwide, following the Covid-induced shutdowns and geopolitical tensions with China.
"We made a couple of attempts in India over the years - for a single or sub set of products but it did not work."
Robbins said that in order to serve India's needs, and make it an export hub for other parts of the world, the company is setting up a production unit, and he reiterated that nearly $1 billion worth of products would be exported in a near term, and the facility would become operational within the next 12 months.
In October 2016, Cisco first announced its manufacturing ambition in India's Pune but the strategy could not materialise.
Lately, the government has come out with a few policy moves to facilitate ease of doing business in order to attract multinationals to invest in the country.
Following the production-linked incentive or PLI scheme, extended to telecom gear manufacturers, several multinationals such as Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and Tejas Networks (a Tata company) have made investments of more than Rs 4,000 crores, as per the telecom department (DoT) statistics.
The networking, security and collaboration company is also embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in a big way, and said that it aims to simplify IT processes and authentication for its nearly 1 million customers and partners worldwide.
"AI is moving so quickly and we as organisations are trying to figure out, how do we use it, along with trust, and what are the risks, how are we getting benefits. We want to do great things with AI but want to do it responsibly," the top executive said.
"We are really excited about the innovation."
The company's strategy, according to Robbins, is quite simple. "When we look to the future, we want to connect everything securely. Today, security is the top area of discussion."
In a recent study commissioned by Cisco, only 15% companies said that they have a robust security architecture that could protect them, and 82% of the enterprises believe that they expect a disruptive cyber event within their organisations over the next 24 months.
