Nokia also had a 20% market share in optical network terminal (ONT) technology in India, as per the study.
India is witnessing an unprecedented surge in demand for high-capacity broadband connectivity, driven by a surge in remote working, increasing digitalization of industry verticals and a host of new use cases.
“As a result, fiber connectivity is a priority for both fixed and mobile operators, with much of the demand coming from fiber to the home (FTTH) but also in the form of transport networks for mobile operators’ 5G deployments,” said Nokia in a statement Tuesday.
“Nokia is at the forefront in the evolution of PON Technology. Receiving independent verification of our leadership position of OLT technology from Omdia is deeply satisfying and we take immense pride in contributing to the digital transformation of India,” said Santiswarup Tripathy, Head of India Fixed Networks RBC at Nokia.
The gear maker in February this year commenced manufacturing of its PON OLTs at its Sriperimbudu factory near Chennai in India on the back of increasing demand from local customers in India, as well as international markets.
“FTTP deployments in developing countries are presenting a significant opportunity for PON equipment vendors. Nokia captured this opportunity in 2021 and 2022 as the leading OLT vendor in India with more than 70% market share,” said Julie Kunstler, Chief Analyst, Broadband Access Intelligence Service at Omdia.
Nokia, in a statement in February, had said that the demand for fiber is also shifting to new regions with the Asia-Pacific region seeing strong demand in markets like Japan, India and Southeast Asia.
“Much of this demand will be seen in the form of fiber to the home (FTTH) but there is also significant demand from mobile network operators (MNOs) as they deploy 5G and need next generation fiber in their transport networks to carry the expected surge in data traffic,” the company had said.
