NEW DELHI: US-based telecom equipment maker Ciena’s India revenue increased 88% in the second quarter year-on-year to around $70 million, driven by strong demand from local service providers, the company’s chief executive Gary Smith said.

“We also continue to drive growth outside of the U.S. In particular, in Q2, Asia Pacific revenue was up 60% year-over-year. This was largely driven by continued revenue growth in India, which was up 88% year-over-year in Q2 to about $70 million, reflecting consistent strong demand from service providers in that market,” he said during the earnings call.

In a recent interview with ETTelecom, Smith said India now has a healthy ecosystem with several fiber broadband providers, webscale companies, and telecom operators.

“5G network densification and network rollout, along with content delivery companies’ expansion into India and the submarine cables business, will drive growth for the company,” he had then said, adding that structure of the Indian telecom market has now settled down, and the company is “very bullish” with growth opportunities.

The company also claimed to have benefitted from the absence of Huawei and
ZTE in the Indian 5G network rollout as telcos moved away quickly from involving Chinese vendors.

Ciena will invest $50- $100 million over the next three to four years to locally manufacture equipment for domestic consumption and exports in India, having tied up with contract manufacturer
Flex.

Ciena increased its manpower in India by 10% last year and is still recruiting more engineers to support its research and development (R&D) efforts.

During the call, Smith said that the key demand drivers behind the growth are continued 5G rollouts and increasing cloud adoption to broadband access and the growing need for more automation. “All of these were strong demand drivers before COVID and the supply chain challenges of the past few years and are arguably even stronger today,” he said.

“AI could prove also to be transformative for service providers and cloud providers alike on top of these existing dynamics. This is increasingly evident with the recent introduction and surging interest in
Generative AI platforms, which are widely expected to drive bandwidth demand over time and create potential new opportunities, of course, for us,” he said.

Ciena performed better than expected concerning revenue in the second quarter and for the first half of fiscal 2023, primarily driven by the supply chain improving faster than anticipated, which enabled the company to ship significantly more products to more customers in recent quarters, Smith said during the call.

The top executive said supply chain improvements enabled Ciena to improve our lead times to customers by more than 50% year-to-date. Consequently, as the supply chain improves and lead times come down, customers no longer need to place advanced orders to secure supply.

“As a result, and as expected, orders were lower than revenue in Q2. We are now clearly in a transitionary period, moving from an environment where orders vastly outstrip supply to one where supply and order flow is beginning to come into some kind of balance. Consequently, this is driving a near-term shift in customer ordering and shipment dynamics and behaviour.”
