NEW DELHI: Virgin Media O2 has selected Mavenir as its Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) vendor.

The US-based telecom gear maker will also be the prime vendor for the telco, providing its Open virtualized Radio Access Network (Open vRAN) solution for sites on Virgin Media O2’s network.

Virgin Media O2 is seeking to roll out a scalable Open vRAN solution as part of its network evolution plans and adopt a flexible, cloud-native architecture, according to a statement by Mavenir.

Mavenir’s Open RAN system will consist of fully virtualized L1, L2 vRAN SW and will operate on
Intel Xeon scalable processors, along with Intel vRAN Accelerator ACC100 and Intel 800 series Ethernet adapters. The delivery will also feature Mavenir’s OpenBeam Radios including massive MIMO, third-party O-RAN based Radio Units (O-RU) for open Fronthaul, network monitoring, and optimisation.

Open RAN seeks to unbundle the hardware and software components of a network, and allow telecom operators to source them from various vendors to roll out the network, thereby helping in cost savings and preventing vendor lock-ins.

“Extending our collaboration with Mavenir to the RAN for the first time will help us establish a future-proof Open vRAN architecture, unlocking the benefits of a multi-vendor open interface while allowing us to rapidly benefit from an end-to-end network solution,” said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2.

ETTelecom Interviews: The world has a lot to learn from India's 5G journey, says Ericsson CTO

"We see great momentum around 5G being used in all various sector. But it starts with things like fixed wireless access. We passed 4 million homes in the US… it was a big ramp-up last year, and we expect a similar kind of opportunity in India and the rest of APAC. There is a new business opportunity for operators," says Ekudden.
