\"\"NEW DELHI: India’s hyper-competitive telecom<\/a> sector will return to stability after consolidation later this year, a top official said, adding that the government was keeping an eye on how consumers would be affected.

“In the next two quarters or in the second half of this year, the telecom industry<\/a> will stabilise with a data explosion which is also taking place in rural areas,” telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan<\/a> said at the India Digital Summit organised by the Internet and Mobile Association of India on Wednesday. “There is a lot of concern at this moment as the market is moving towards four players... how it would impact consumers will be a concern.”

\nSundararajan added that consolidation in the telecom sector would require handholding from the government.

The sector was thrown into turmoil after Reliance Jio<\/a> Infocomm started its disruptive 4G-based services in September 2016, triggering price wars and consolidation.
\n
\nVodafone India and Idea Cellular, India’s No. 2 and 3 carriers, are combining their operations, while market leader Bharti Airtel is merging operators Telenor, Tikona and Tata Teleservices’ consumer business with itself. Reliance Jio Infocomm has decided to buy the wireless assets of Reliance Communications.

\nSundararajan underlined the need to improve quality of services, for which a meeting with carriers will be called next week, and to double the number of broadband Internet connections in India from about 353 million currently.
\n
\nThe view was backed by Niti Aayog’s chief executive officer Amitabh Kant, who stressed on the importance of broadband networks in the light of mobile phones becoming cheaper and access to the Internet for all Indians becoming that much more affordable.

\n“The cost of smartphone acquisition has fallen to $1per consumer,” Kant said, alluding to Reliance Jio’s offer to sell devices with a three-year payment term. He added that in the next 4 to 5 years, all Indians would be using smartphones.
