The service is being launched after a delay of five months. The first announcement was made in August last year. With this, Manglauru will become the fifth city in the state after Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur and Vijayapura to get this facility.
Sources in Dakshina Kannada telecom district’s BSNL<\/a> said 4G services are being rolled in tier-II cities as BSNL wants to test the service in a smaller population before launching it in Bengaluru. Their services in four other cities have been successful, which made the launch possible in Mangaluru.
In Vijayapura, the services were launched almost a year ago. A person using BSNL services said the speeds were good and the network performance was satisfactory, unlike 3G services, where speeds were pathetic. BSNL Dakshina Kannada telecom district sources said that the speeds would be in the range of 8mbps to 10mbps in areas where 3G services were offering speeds below 12kbps, especially in a busy location like MG Road.
The service is already up and running in 13 towers from Ucchila in Udupi district to Mukka near Surathkal, about 24km from here. Sources said that 151 towers in the Mangaluru area have already been converted to 4G technology, and BSNL has already reformed the 2,100MHz spectrum band, used for 3G, to strengthen its 4G network. The telecom operator is deploying L900 technology in the 2,100MHz band to complement its 4G services.
When activated, 4G services would be seamlessly available from Uchila till Nethravathi bridge in Mangaluru, a distance of about 50km, and till Farangipete on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway. Beyond 4G connectivity, the services would automatically switch over to 3G services when the customers move out of the 4G range. The district rollout is expected by April 2020.
As on January 21, the 3G sim conversion to 4G was at 37% in Mangaluru and 42% in the Uchila to Mukka area.
