NEW DELHI: Cisco Systems, the US-based telecom networking and software multinational will soon set up a facility in the country to manufacture hardware products in line with the Centre's Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision.

"Cisco is setting up a manufacturing unit to produce equipment and hardware products locally and to build a supply chain for markets worldwide," Sanjay Kaul, president, Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) at Cisco told ETTelecom

The company produces an array of networking, mobility, collaboration and data centre products that include access points, switches, routers, controllers, endpoints, and contact centre gear.

Cisco seeks to take benefit from Centre's recent schemes to propel local manufacturing, and the company's new production facility would be in partnership with an original design manufacturer (
ODM) partner, according to the person privy to the matter.

Kaul, however, refused to divulge further details.

The multinational produces networking switches and routers out of Korea, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore currently.

In 2016, Cisco marked the launch of its local manufacturing initiative in the country by setting up a unit in Maharashtra's Pune which it had to shut down due to ecosystem challenges.

Presently, India is the second-largest research and development (R&D) facility for Cisco after its home location US.

Following the launch of commercial next generation (
5G) services, the US-headquartered company is eyeing to augment its India revenues by partnering with telecom carriers, and large enterprises.

The company, according to the executive, is also working closely with
Reliance Jio to tap small-and-medium businesses, as part of the latter's enterprise strategy on the back of 5G.
