Mumbai: Lava International on Wednesday launched its 'Z Series' of smartphones, marking its entry in the premium smartphone category, with Z25 and Z10 priced at Rs 18,000 and Rs 11,500 respectively.

Lava's entry into the above Rs 15,000 price bracket is part of a long term strategy where it will be targeting higher average sale prices, translating into higher revenue. The company has phased out 3G phones and is only offering 4G capable devices to consumers.

As opposed to 10-12 models across price range, the company will focus five to eight models, under Rs 15,000, only half of the models will be under Rs 10,000, that typically makes the bulk of low cost sales among Indian handset makers. "Z series is a premium product category for us which is born out of our end-to- end control on entire product value chain - from design to manufacturing," said Gaurav Nigam, Product Head, Lava International.

The company will also offer retailers and distributors higher margins and commissions, than they offer at present, so they push Lava phones into the market. "Commissions will be given on a monthly basis, like salaries," said Nigam. Lava will fund the retail margins and commissions from its own reserve.

The company, however, declined to comment on raising funds to support this feat at a time when Chinese players are outspending the Indian counterparts in ground level and macro level marketing and advertising.

On the back of these plans, the company aims to climb back into top five smartphone players by end of 2018, in the under Rs 15,000 price segment.

The company is asking distributors not to keep stock beyond 20 days this month onward, and will keep prices of models the same across online and offline markets.

In the offline space, over 1 lakh stores will house Lava phones while the company plans to expand its number of service centers to 1,000.
Z25 and Z10 will be available in select retail stores in Delhi from March 23, 2017 and in other cities in a few weeks’ time.
