MUMBAI: Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran’s remuneration nearly doubled in FY17-18 after he joined the holding company of the Tata group from Tata Consultancy Services.

In the year to March 2018, the 56-year old Tata group lifer earned Rs 55.11crore as remuneration — about 85% of which was in the form of commission and percentage of profit, Tata Son’s latest annual report showed.

Chandrasekaran got the top job at the $103 billion salt-tosoftware group in February 2017. The new chairman had received Rs 30.15 crore for 11 months he served as
TCS managing director.

Chandrasekaran’s annual payout is nearly three times more than his predecessor
Cyrus Mistry, who earned Rs 16 crore as remuneration before being ousted by the board through a vote of no-confidence in October 2016.

Tata Sons was unavailable for comment.

Insiders say that as a Tata Sons nominee on board, Mistry chose to cap his remuneration with the holding company’s profitability.

Cyrus, scion of the Pallonji Mistry family, is Tata Sons’ largest individual shareholder along with his brother Shapoor Mistry, with 18.4%.

Chandrasekaran took charge as the first non-Parsi chairman of the Indian conglomerate and has been successful in maintaining a good equation with all Tata stakeholders, top group officials said.

The Tata group is restructuring its businesses with an emphasis on margins, to become a leaner and more agile corporate structure with reportedly 32 holding companies through a strategy of consolidation and synergy. The group is creating business verticals such as aerospace and defence, scaling up core businesses like steel and shutting those that cannot be scaled up.

“Chandrasekaran’s salary increase probably justifies the responsibilities that have been thrust upon him. That is no easy task,” said an investment analyst at a foreign brokerage firm.

“Having said that, salary increases usually have to be looked at along with group performance. Especially given the huge write-offs and limited improvement of Tata Sons at operating level. One needs to take a look at how the next year pans out,” he added.

Meanwhile, group chief financial officer Saurabh Agrawal earned Rs 13.46 crore as remuneration for nine months starting June 27, 2017 when he was appointed.

Agrawal was an investment banker and former head of strategy at the Birla group before joining the Tatas.
