<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NEW DELHI: Nokia<\/a>’s 5G radio deal with India’s top telecom operator Reliance Jio<\/a> represents a significant volume potential, said the Finnish telecom equipment<\/a> maker’s President and CEO Pekka Lundmark<\/a>.

“We have won 45% of the 5G radio network for
Bharti Airtel<\/a> and then, of course, the fact that we now have a deal with Reliance Jio as well is really significant because that is a customer where we were not in radio network business in 4G at all, our market share there was 0%,” Lundmark said in an earnings call with analysts.

“This [Jio deal] is a very meaningful new customer engagement for us and an important market share gain. We have stated previously that our ambition is to grow faster than the market in Mobile Networks and to gain share, and it is deals like this that we believe will firmly put us on a path to deliver that,” he added.

This week, Nokia and its Swedish rival
Ericsson<\/a> said the two companies have bagged 5G radio deals from Jio. The companies though have not disclosed details of the contracts.

“We will see when that could be disclosed, but it is a meaningful market share. It's not a small piece. It is a meaningful market share. So this represents a significant volume potential for us,” Lundmark said.

The chief executive said Nokia has logged a strong year in North America, but it is expected to normalize while the aggressive 5G rollout plans of Indian telcos will affect volumes for the company in 2023.

“India 5G basically goes from zero to very high levels in a short period of time. Operators' 5G ramp-up plans are really, really aggressive, and that will affect a lot of volume in India in '23 and, consequently, also the mix,” he noted.

Jio has launched its beta 5G services in four cities. By contrast, Airtel has launched its 5G network in eight cities. Both telcos aim to cover the entire country with fifth-generation networks between 2023-2024.

In the quarter that ended September 30, Nokia reported a 12% year-on-year growth in its India sales to 281 million euros from 250 million euros in the same quarter a year ago. Though the sales declined marginally by 1% in the same period on a constant currency basis, that the company attributed to the timing of 5G licenses, with net sales expected to ramp up over the coming quarters.

In contrast, Nokia’s sales in North America were up 28% to 2,275 million euros in Q3, compared to 1,776 million euros in the same quarter year ago. Sales though declined 10% on a constant currency basis.

Lundmark shared that the biggest opportunity for Nokia in the mid-term is to grow its business beyond telecom companies into the enterprise segment.

“We believe this will be the fastest-growing portion of our addressable market and our products are increasingly compelling. In recent quarters, we have highlighted how strong our order growth has been. In Q3, I was pleased to see Enterprise accelerate strongly, delivering 22% growth in constant currency year-over-year supported by the improving supply chain situation,” he said.

In the private wireless space, Nokia continues to see strong momentum, adding another 30 customers in Q3.
