Samsung India’s revenue from operations rose 8.6% to Rs 82,451 crore in the financial year 2021-22 (FY22), driven by its mobile phone business, regulatory filings sourced from business intelligence platform Tofler showed.

The cell phone business alone contributed Rs 55,201 crore to revenue, according to the disclosure to the Registrar of Companies.

Net profit, however, fell 4.9% to Rs 3,844 crore, which industry executives said was due to aggressive pricing of mobile phones and televisions on
e-commerce portals to win market share.

The company did not attribute reasons for the growth in revenue or profit decline in the mandatory filings.

Samsung lost its top position as the largest consumer-facing multinational corporation in the country in FY22 to Maruti Suzuki, when the Japanese car maker reported revenue of Rs 88,295 crore.

In FY21, Samsung India had pipped
Maruti to the top spot.

The South Korean company’s total revenue, including other income, in India came in at Rs 85,324 crore in FY22, 10% more than in FY21.

The slide in its FY22 profit could be because of a base effect, said Tarun Pathak, research director at market tracker
Counterpoint Research.

Pathak said the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic (in 2020) had resulted in a strong pent-up demand across consumer electronic products – mobile phones being the leading sub-category - in FY22.

“…we have seen Samsung maintaining its presence across all price tiers (in mobile phones) along with channel expansion, especially activities around offline which could have increased some operational expenses and, hence, the decline in year-on-year profit,” he said.

Mobile phones account for Samsung’s largest business category in India, accounting for 67% of the total turnover, though sales were down marginally from Rs 55,397 crore in FY21.

According to market researcher IDC India, Samsung was the fourth largest smartphone brand in India by volume (or number of units sold) with a 16.3% share in the April-June quarter. Chinese brand
Xiaomi led with a 20.4% share, followed by Realme at 17.5% and Vivo at 16.9%, IDC said.

Samsung India’s second-largest business was home appliances, which contributed 12% with a turnover of Rs 9,981 crore. The network equipment business contributed over 5%, the filings showed.

Samsung has not only been exporting products - including mobile phones - manufactured in the country, but also components, as per the filings.

The company has said previously that it would invest Rs 1,588 crore to set up a new compressor manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.
